Why P2 MXF is awkward on a modern Mac

An HPX170 card stores separate video MXF, audio MXF, and CLIP XML metadata. Pairing and clip order depend on that metadata. Moving individual MXF files out of the folder can break pairing and make batch conversion harder.

What HPX Converter does

HPX Converter scans a P2 card folder, matches video and audio using CLIP XML UMID verification (the same mechanism Premiere uses for P2), orders clips by shoot metadata, and exports numbered MOV files. It was developed and tested with HPX170 footage.

Folder structure

Point the app at the card root or the CONTENTS folder. The app looks for:

VIDEO/ — video MXF files
AUDIO/ — audio MXF files
CLIP/ — CLIP XML metadata

Output modes

Maximum Compatibility — Apple ProRes MOV (422 HQ by default). Larger files, slower conversion. Intended for editing workflows.

Fast — H.264 MOV via hardware encoding. Smaller files, faster conversion. Validated for HPX170 DVCPRO HD footage. Suited to QuickTime and Finder playback.

Editing the result

ProRes MOV files are widely used as mezzanine files in NLEs. Fast H.264 MOV files open in QuickTime Player. Test your preferred editor with the free trial before a large batch.

Keep the original card

Conversion writes new MOV files; original MXF files on the P2 card are not altered. Keep the card or a copy as your source archive.
